This was the beginning of something that I will always treasure for years to come. This week-long brigade was incredibly humbling and taught me a lot about what goes on in the world. Being able to experience this brigade with both old and new friends definitely has a special place in my heart.

During clinical days, I had a lot of fun taking blood pressure and interacting with the patients in their native language. I was also granted the opportunity to sit down with a medical doctor, 1-on-1, and observe his interactions with his patients. He would explain to me everything he’s doing, how he’s doing it, and why he’s doing it. This experience taught me a lot and gives me all the more reason to continue with what I’ve been pursuing. The gratitude patients have is both motivational and heartwarming. Being able to help people is one of the best feelings in the world.

On the Water Brigade, we dug trenches in order for the community to attain clean water. Although we had a limited amount of time with the community, I worked as hard as I could. The urge to help out was my motivation to keep going. The families around us would even play loud music to keep us entertained!

On the Public Health Brigade, I had the privilege to go into a family’s home and help build the family an eco-stove. The community welcomed us with open arms and we even had a small dance party! It truly was humbling to experience their kind hospitality and their trust in us.

After our hard work, our coordinators took us into the small town of San Juan de Flores to get ice cream. We even ran into the mayor while taking a photo and he decided to join in! Now that was lucky!

The last day in Honduras was perhaps the most difficult day. Overall, this brigade has been one of my most humbling, memorable, and blessed experiences I’ve had. You never truly know what’s going on in the world until you experience them for yourself. The world needs more people making a positive difference. We need to be the change we want to see in the world. And making a difference with these awesome people made it all that much better. I will always treasure these memories. Honduras really has been a great teacher.
