Octavio Vasquez Jr.

Fall ‘17 Vice President, Spring ‘18 President California State University, Sacramento

Global Medical Brigades provided an experience of a lifetime, and the holistic model was carried out throughout the entire trip. Each day was filled with educational moments for not only us, the students, but also the community members who attended the adult and children’s charlas. Our team had the opportuni

ty to experience more than just the medical aspects of the brigade and were able to help a community, by building eco-stoves on our public health day. Each stove was carefully and strategically built to minimize fumes emitting into the homes, and as a result each family would be able to have a stove that is overall more efficient.

This was my first brigade and the school’s inaugural brigade, and I went as one of the leaders for our team. Going into this trip I thought I would be changing people’s lives, but in the end it was my life that changed. I feel enlightened after this experience, and I plan to bring back the knowledge I’ve learned back to my school campus. I hope that my experiences will encourage others to go out and do more for people in need, just like my team and I were able to do.
